Rogers Cup, Montreal 2015
by MAC

Well, the good news is that Rafa made it to the quarter final in both singles and doubles. The bad news is that he lost both of them. The frustrating news is that for the 10th time this year, the person who beat him in singles promptly lost in the next round. Why can't these guys run out of steam a match earlier? Novak Djokovic remains the only player in 2015 to beat Rafa and win another match in the same tournament.

He partnered Fernando Verdasco in the doubles and they had three matches that went right up to the wire. They beat Tomas Berdych and Jack Sock, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 and the number 8 seeds, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, 7-6(8), 6-7(2), 10-4 before losing to the number 1 seeds, Bob and Mike Bryan, 3-6, 7-6(5), 8-10.

As ever, it looked like he enjoyed the doubles.

In the singles he had two good wins. He beat Sergei Stakhovsky, 7-6(4), 6-3. This is the player who beat Roger Federer in the second round at Wimbledon a couple of year ago. Funny how the commentators never brought this up during the match since we are never allowed to forget any player who has ever beaten Rafa. Frustrated? Me?

He then beat Mikhail Youzhny, 6-3, 6-3.

The award for going all out against Rafa and then failing in the next round goes to Kei Nishikori in this tournament. He played lights out tennis and Rafa lost, 2-6, 4-6.

The work in progress continues next week in Cincinnati.

Siempre contigo, Rafa
¡Vamos!
